Monday 2 June: Back from vacation in AZ and on Monday I visited the North (Stiles) Treatment Plant. Am Avocet of previous posts no where in sight. Black-necked Stilts still very abundant below and on the sludge Pits. Found no less than 8 pairs of parent birds with broods of 2 - 4 long legged fuzzy balls of chicks on the sludge pits, at least another 12-18 nests being sat on or guarded. Killdeer really the only other shorebird around. Friday 6 June: Ended the week with a visit to the Pits (South Treatment Plant) and Ensley Bottoms. Hot, Humid and few birds except for the continued good quantity of Black-necked Stilts scattered all about the facility. Again Killdeer only other shorebird around. Lots of equipment traffic moving around the levees and fields here during a late lunch hour visit. Riverport Rd Ponds and sloughs- 2 - Yel Crowned Night Herons flying between the ponds, 3- Green Herons and 2 least Terns. Presidents Island: Visited the Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher nest for the first time this year and moma bird is sitting tight. No sighting of the father. 15 Great Egrets, 1- G Blue heron and 2 Black-necked stilts feeding in wet land area north side of Harbor Ave.to the west, Water drying up in these once flooded areas and farmers starting to till up the ground. South Memphis: Trigg Ave Western Kingbird Nest site: Another first of the year visit, Moma Sitting tight here also. Father nearby and occaisionally coming in to keep other birds at thier distance from the nest. Candy Factory E. Kingbird nest site: Looks like a bird sitting on the nest material but couldn't see well because of the angle. An E. Kingbird was feeding nearby but never went to the nest.
