We saw 2 Short-eared Owls in Cades Cove this evening, Sunday, 12-15-2013. The
first one was perched on a bare tree on the left side of the loop road about
2/10 mile before the intersection with Hyatt Lane. This large tree was the
only one in that field. The second owl was on a bare tree at the right edge of
Hyatt Lane about 6/10 mile south of the loop road. We found the first owl at
4:40 p.m. and left it at 4:55. We found the second one at 5:15. After driving
on south on Hyatt and seeing a Northern Harrier skimming the grass tops to the
east, we turned around and drove back north. The second owl was missing, but
we saw it or a third one on another tree nearby.
