June 28, 2008 Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co, TN My latest White-rumped Sandpiper was seen at the pits on June 21 but the same day 3 Least Sandpipers appear for a while and promptly headed south within the hour, so I witnessed birds going in both directions. The Least's return was right on time as I can always get shorebirds coming south around the 21st each year. On the 22nd, I had up to a dozen returning Least along the MS RV. Today at the pits, there were 9 Least Sandpipers in 2 groups and 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, these early returns usually don't stay too long and each day from here on, more species will appear. As the numbers grow the birds will stay longer for our enjoyment. The wonders of migration............ Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
