June 10-11, 2006 Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co. TN On Saturday, the pits produced 7 White-rumped Sandpipers and 2 late running Semipalmated Sandpipers. On Sunday the Semi's had cleared out but there were 19 White-rumped Sandpipers. You can expect small pulses of White-rumped for a little while yet. The nest of a pair of Black-necked Stilts, that I had expected to hatch young this week did not disappoint, as mom had 2 feeding along the edge of one pool. I never saw more than the two kids and they did not look more than a day or so old. There may have been more as dad was staying close to the bank at another location and was pretty agitated. There are stilt nest strewn all over the place and there should be youngsters everywhere shortly. I watched as a jilted female interrupted another pair, smack dab in the middle of their romance dance. Evidently humans don't have a lock on jealousy. The Killdeer in just one pit numbered 168 and were joined by 2 Horned Larks and a ton of pseudo shorebirds, Starlings. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
