It's still there and unquestionably on territory. Phillip Casteel, Mike Smith and I had crippling views for 30 minutes and it required basically no effort; we finally walked away with it still sitting on an exposed perch. The dirt trail appears to be well within its territory. In my opinion, this bird has likely been there for a month or so and just went undiscovered until Phillip went back to that area for the first time this spring. One additional note: it is not necessary to use a tape to see this bird, and I strongly caution against it because of the risk of disturbing the viewing opportunity for others. I am not against responsible use of tape playback in certain circumstances, and I'm certainly not intending to start a debate on that particular hot button issue; I'm just observing that in this case, whatever your opinion on that issue generally, it's completely unnecessary. This bird was routinely flying from point to point within 20 feet of us, singing constantly, and never showed the slightest sign that it cared we were there, even when we were repositioning for photos right underneath it. A few times it even dropped to the ground to feed and sing.
