Shelby Bottoms
Nashville, Davidson Co., TN
2015 Oct. 5

Phillip Casteel and I went searching for wrens at Shelby Bottoms in
Nashville this morning. He had found both Marsh and Sedge Wrens there
on Saturday. With blue sky and bright sunshine, it was hard to look
in some directions but a glorious morning to be out and about. We
went on the ecology trail past the modest pond to the open field
and wandered up the path toward the observation deck to the point
where he had found the wrens, including a singing Marsh Wren, a couple
days earlier. Although several HOUSE WRENs chattered at us, and
COMMON YELLOWTHROATs chipped extensively, we did not hear or see
either of our main quarry.

Back on the asphalt loop we approached the large observation platform
that overlooks the same field. There at the edge of the trail we
heard and then got good looks at a SEDGE WREN who soon flew across
in front of us and disappeared in the growth on the other side.
Timing is everything.
