Sevier county, 4/11/08, 1:00 - 2:30 PM Sevierville: We counted 25 great blue herons in 20 occupied nests in the downtown rookery; we couldn't see any nestlings. This bunch shatters the presumption that birds will seek a secluded location for nesting. The rookery is less than 100 yards from Hwy 411, in a narrow grove between a Weigel's and Middle Creek. The nests are in plain view of thousands of vehicles daily. Douglas Dam: From the parking lot below the dam, we could see 9 occupied GBH nests in the tree line above the bluff on the opposite side of the tailwaters; no nestlings were visible. Totals at the Dam: Great Blue Heron (36) Black-crowned Night-heron (10) Osprey (5) N. Rough-wing Swallow (2) Michael Sledjeski & Leslie Gibbens Del Rio TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
