This morning I was out for a walk at Oak Hill Cemetery. This is a small cemetery located in north Kingsport, Sullivan Co., Tn. As I was walking I saw a smallish Cooper's Hawk flying across the cemetery carrying a small bird in it's talons and headed for a nearby woodlot on the north (Lynn Garden) side of the property. I was anxious to follow him as I had seen a nice looking stick nest in that area back before the leaves came out on the trees. I never saw any birds at the nest and sort of forgot about it after I found an active Cooper's Hawk nest a few hundred yards away on the other side of the cemetery back in March. I walked over to the edge of the woodlot and found the nest. Couldn't see any birds near or on it. After watching for a few minutes a male Cooper's Hawk flew into the nest and a female came up and flew off. The male stayed at the nest for around 15 minutes. I could not see if he was feeding young. The female returned and the male flew off again. The birds were quiet with no vocalizations. This is active Cooper's Hawk nest number two for the cemetery this spring. Another still active nest is just a few hundred yards away on the other side of the cemetery. Other good birds there this morning were: Wood Thrush Swainson's Thrush Blackburnian Warbler Bay-breasted Warbler Yellow Warbler Summer Tanager Indigo Bunting Rose-breasted Grosbeak Chipping Sparrow Rick Phillips Sullivan County Kingsport, Tennessee =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
