You would think 3 better than average (we may be demoted after today) watching
4 Scoters for 3.5 hours should be able to get it right. The four Scoters are
not Black Scoters after all. 2 are definitely white winged (we never saw any
white this morning in normal white-winged location). The other 2 are slightly
smaller without white wings as far as I can tell. Saw the birds flying once
and saw the individually flapping their wings at times. One or two did not
appear to have white in wings. Bills did not appear to be typical surf scoter
bills. But they could have been first year birds without fully developed bills.
This afternoon probably 15 birders we’re out and we did not see yellow on bills
like we assumed we saw in the early morning light. So I am going to say scoter
species on 2 and white winged on other 2. I will say these Scoters all appeared
well smaller than the guides say they are compared to other species. All four
were seen diving many times.
We also had a group of Common Mergansers this morning at this location plus a
Canvasback and 2 Redheads.
