After the KTOS outing at Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery this morning, 5 KTOS members stopped at the Weir Dam to see two very obliging scoters. They were diving right in front of the pier for about 30 minutes, around 11 a.m. I saw white on the wings of one very quickly, but no one else did; I was becoming convinced both were Surf Scoters and I had merely imagined the white. Both are sooty, with dark eyes, and both have two whitish face patches, though one has a more vertical patch (lores) than the other. We stared and stared, but no one else saw the white. Finally they preened, and then we had excellent views of the white secondaries of the White-winged Scoter. The other bird did not reveal any white in its wings, and it's the one with the vertical loral patch, so we believe it was the Surf Scoter. Carole Gobert got some pictures. Two Ring-necked Ducks were also present, as well as many Canada Geese.
