On Sunday afternoon, we birded along Schoolhouse Gap Trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park between 17:30 19:40 in hopes of finding Swainson's Warbler. While we believe we heard two in the first half-mile of the trail, we were never able to see one to confirm the ID. We walked the trail from the parking lot up to 1.1 mile marker where it splits off into different trails; from this point, we also covered about one mile on the unnamed spur that appears on the left soon after this intersection. We had our greatest success in actually seeing birds on this side trail, including a male Hooded Warbler who was observed singing and carrying food. This spur appears a few dozen feet past the trail intersection and is marked by a "people" gate to keep horses out. Full species list below. Northern flicker Pileated woodpecker Acadian flycatcher Yellow-throated vireo Red-eyed vireo Blue jay American crow Carolina chickadee Wood thrush Northern parula Black-throated green warbler Black-and-white warbler Worm-eating warbler Swainson's warbler *probable but not confirmed Louisiana waterthrush Hooded warbler Scarlet tanager Northern cardinal Wildflowers: Galax, Fairy wand (both male and female plants), Bowman's root. After dinner, we also visited the first two pull-outs along the Foothills Parkway section in Walland between 21:20 21:40 to listen for nightjars. We were rewarded with 4 Eastern whip-poor-will and 3 Chuck-wll's-widow. We try to visit this spot each year, and it is consistently good for both species.
