Despite a morning of storms accompanied by heavy rain and a tree across the
road into the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs Co. at Birchwood, there were
still 94 visitors today. Unfortunately, the hooded crane did NOT reward this
hardy group of birdwatchers. It was not seen all day. Several bald eagle
sightings did provide some reward. One of the visitors was from Ireland, the
12th country to be represented at the refuge since Dec. 14 when the hooded
crane was first reported. The number of visits to the refuge has now reached
3081! This total DOES NOT INCLUDE THE THOUSANDS OF VISITORS TO THE TENNESSEE
SANDHILL CRANE FESTIVAL LAST WEEKEND. Three visitors to the Cherokee Removal
Memorial Park and I saw 4 "dancing" whooping cranes on Hiwassee Island near
dark this evening.
