We had spent the holiday at Pickett State Park & I had been grumbling about
the lack of birds to watch. Imagine my surprise when I checked out this
morning, & we saw 3 piileated woodpeckers (while hearing a fourth across the
highway) perhaps a hundred feet from the park office.

On the way home, we were driving through Monterey not long after noon today.
We were pleasantly surprised to see 40 or 50 cranes migrating. I confess I
practically drove off the road trying to see them!

So in addition to the beautiful scenery & rock formations, we did get to do
at least a little birdwatching after all.
