I drove from Cleveland, Tennessee south to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia between 3 and 4 this afternoon. As I left Cleveland, I saw thirty to forty sandhill cranes flying North in three well formed V formations over a mall parking lot. We saw several other flocks of cranes in route. When I stopped at a Wal-Mart in Georgia, there were numerous V formations flying overhead as I ducked inside for about 30 minutes. When I got back to the car, there were even more flocks of fast flying (with the assist of a strong wind) cranes headed northeast into Tennessee in a wave of V formations. I saw between 200 and 300 in about 10 minutes. This is an unusual number of flights in this particular area which is just 2 or 3 miles from Tennessee. Looks like we aren't the only ones glad to see the cold icy weather offer a break today ahead of heavier rain later.
