38 Sandhill Cranes were sighted at 3:30 this afternoon at Cove Lake State Park in Campbell County, TN! (NE of Knoxville) It was extremely windy and cold with snow flurries blowing about when we heard the distant calls and watched them coming in from the NE and start their descent into the park fields. Quickly a flock of Canada Geese (27) flew up underneath them in a V- formation and seemed to challenge their plans to land. They pulled back up and flew off towards Caryville Mt. rising higher and higher. A shame they did not land, nevertheless a record for the park and County (at least for me) and an exciting acrobatic maneuver to see those Geese and Cranes interact. I doubt they have ever been sighted here before. Does anyone have any records? If so, I would like to know. (Reply privately off tnbird list) There were very large flocks of Cedar Waxwings (200 +) literally swarming like bees in the Cedar Trees and eating berries voraciously. 2 good size rafts of DUCKS were present with RING-NECKED DUCK the highest count of 102. AMERICAN WIGEON (22) were seen for the first time this fall as well as 3 NORTHERN SHOVELER, one a nicely colored male and the other 2 females. Others were BUFFLEHEAD (12) HOODED MERGANSER ( 33 ) GREEN-WINGED TEAL (2) LESSER SCAUP (5) GADWALL (48) Over 100 RING-BILLED GULLS and HERRING GULLS were swirling around over the lake, but were gone with 20 minutes.
