I found a dead Wilson's Snipe today on the ground beside our garage. I could see on the white painted wall where the bird hit about eight feet from the ground. Even lifeless the beauty of this bird is astounding. But we are puzzled that if this happened at night the bird was flying so low and if in daytime why it could not have avoided the wall. We returned from six weeks on Long Island with so much birding joy as we found three lifer sparrows - Seaside, Nelson's and Saltmarsh Sharp-tail's all in one spot and in multiple numbers - and now only lack the Black-chinned that keeps avoiding us in southeast Arizona. But seeing this gorgeous Snipe dead has really made us sad. I know it happens all the time but holding this one in my hands brought powerful emotions.
