Late Thursday afternoon, March 17, I saw about 60 sandhill cranes in the area near the Rhea County airport. Several of them were doing their "courting dances." The cranes were less scattered than in previous observations in the same area this season. Are they getting ready to head north? Later, at the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park in Meigs County, I saw at least 4 osprey on at least three nesting platforms. Two other observations were at such a great distance up the Tennessee River near Hiwassee Island that I couldn't be sure of my identifications. I saw about 40 cormorants (?), most in one tree on a mud bar. Also, 4 large, apparently solid white birds were observed swimming in the same area. I don't know if they were swans, domestic geese or something else.
