Willie appeared out of the rainy mist and darkness into the spotlight brightness at 6:20 a.m. today for a quick sip, then returned a couple of minutes later for a more lengthy one. When we returned home yesterday morning and he came for such extended drinks almost immediately, we were puzzled; he acted as if he had not eaten for quite a while. But after unloading the car and further watching, we understood why he had not eaten regularly. That Sharp-shinned Hawk returned - we apparently frightened it away when we came home - and sat on a telephone line directly above Willie's cedar bush sitting place. When we yelled at the hawk and he left, in a few minutes Willie came for more long drinks and then settled down to his regular 3-4 visits per hour until his last visit at 5:05 p.m. We never thought a beautiful immature Sharp-shinned would become a nuisance, but when he threatens an even more gorgeous Willie, he does. How wonderful it will be when the unnatural order of today gets returned to the original order of peace and harmony and birds don't eat each other.
