19 May 2003 Viking Mountain Greene County While birding our way to the top of Viking Mountain this morning, Alice Loftin, Linda Northrop, and I observed an adult female Ruffed Grouse with five downy young feeding alongside the road about 0.1 mile below Camp Creek Bald. Viking Mountain is located astride the Tennessee-North Carolina line. Camp Creek Bald caps the top of the mountain between Blackstack Cliffs to the northeast and the summit a short distance to the southwest and extends downward on the Tennessee side of the slope for 100-200 feet. The elevation at the summit is approximately 4800 feet. The elevation where the grouse were seen is about 4700 feet, and the area consists of a moderately open birch-beech-maple transition zone with extensive rhododendron thickets and other types of understory. Also present on the mountain were good numbers of about a half dozen species of warblers, along with various other summer and permanent residents.
