Our first of the season Ruby-throated Hummingbird – a very mature male – showed
up this afternoon. He was apparently very hungry as he drank over a dozen long
times before resting and then returning to the feeder again in about thirty
minutes. We were in Texas during February and March and when we returned home
last Wednesday night we put out hummer feeders early the next morning and our
usual seed in the yard. Since there was no one to put out seed for two months
we assumed the White-throated Sparrows would all be gone but were surprised
when 3 came out of the brush pile and began eating before Virginia could get
back in the house and Friday morning there were 5 of them along with all our
normal yard birds. It is amazing to us that the birds come back to the yard so
soon after not having seed there for such long periods of time.
