Holston Valley near South Holston Lake Sullivan Co. On Thanksgiving morning I discovered the Ross's Goose along Tenn. Rt. 44 near where it becomes Va. Rt. 75 just south of the Virginia stateline in Sullivan County not far from Musick's Campground. At 8:30 a.m. it was feeding in the corn stubble field with 75 Canada Geese. This location is 4.9 miles east of Middlebrook Lake whee the bird is most often seen. Later in the morning I met up with Don Miller and Linda Norththrop, birders from Greeneville, TN. Don said they had just come from Middlebrook Lake where, at 9:50 a.m., the Ross's Goose flew in with 15 Canada Geese. I was a Middlebrook Lake at 10:50 a.m. but it was not then to be found among the geese hanging out. About 3 p.m. Bryan Stevens telephone to say the bird was back at Middlebrook and at the spillway of the dam. Happy Thanksgiving weekend.
