My grapevines are bouncing back after the late freeze. Last year they attracted birds like the Cedar Waxwing and the Carolina Chickadee. This year I have listed the Eastern Spotted Cucumber Beetle and the Grape Berry Moth. Death and dying is natural, but are dogs ? The neighbor's dog behind us carried off the just fledged baby American Robin. Every other bird in the neighbor was screaming bloody murder as the little one was taken away and executed by Bruno the Boxer. Some deaths come with more mystery. I have found two cadavers in my birdbath. These were blind and featherless chicks. We can't figure out whether they were brought to the birdbath and then drowned ? Or did they die in the nest and were disposed of in the birdbath ? Were they West Nile Virus patients ? And then, why would another bird foul the collective water supply by placing corpses in the water ? Twice. It is to me a mystery.
