Oct. 15, 2010 Mississippi River Shelby Co. TN Last week the first migrating Coots started showing up as singles or a few just scattered around what little water is left after 2 months without rain. Friday, the event that I've been watching for happened. Five dark pods of Coots floated down the Mississippi!! Each pod averaged around 20-30 birds (groups will get larger) and in each pod were various numbers of Ruddy Ducks ( high number just 3 in one pod) and a total of 23 Pied-billed Grebes. Only 2 Ring-billed Gulls but the spigot is opening - Keep them Rollin' on the River!! Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
