I finally counted - or tried to count - the gulls in the sunshine today
and estimated at least 800 Ring-billed Gulls loafing on the ice where
Prater Flats is frozen over in Ish Creek Bay near Lowes Ferry Road in
Blount County.
I estimated them looking through my spotting scope and tried to count
them. They were densely packed and there may be a couple a hundred more
than the 800 I estimated. They started using the ice a few days ago and
are now pretty close to Lowe's Ferry Road. I did notice a couple of
gulls that looked smaller but could not ID them. The Bonapartes that
were here for weeks seem to have disappeared with the cold spell.
You should be able to get good views of gulls in Ish Creek Bay in the
afternoon sun from Lowes Ferry Road. They usually leave about 4:30 or 5
every afternoon.
