Radnor Lake State Natural Area Nashville-Davidson Co. TN 19 May 2010 Brilliant sunshine greeted 15 birders who joined the final outing of the Spring 2010 Wednesday Walks at Radnor Lake, sponsored by the Nashville chapter of TOS. Among today's highlights were two PHILADELPHIA VIREOS that cooperated nicely in the trees beside the house by the spillway. The yellow breast showed up very clearly in the morning sunlight. Also nearby, below the dam, was a HOODED WARBLER that could be heard singing a slight variation of the normal song. This particular bird-or one with the exact odd song-has been regularly observed in the same spot for at least a week. Later along the Lake Trail was a fairly cooperative CANADA WARBLER. Several AMERICAN REDSTARTS were seen flitting along the Lake Trail as well. Another highlight, at the Long Bridge, low in the underbrush, was a coy female MOURNING WARBLER. She allowed us several nano-second views and then disappeared. Finally returning the parking lot, we got a quick look at a soaring juvenile BROAD-WINGED HAWK. Thanks to all who participated this spring and for providing all the extra spotting and hearing skills which made the walks a pleasure.
