Reelfoot to Memphis Birding Run
Traveling
Well the 4th running of the Reelfoot to Memphis Labor Day Weekend Birding
Adventure was run yesterday Sept. 1, 2018. 46 birders from 4 states attended.
Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, and of course Tennessee were all represented.
Tennessee birders came from as far away as Johnson City and Kingsport and
everywhere in between. Who would of thought a post on Tennessee Birding
Facebook page inviting birders to participate in and all day birding adventure
along the Mississippi Flyway rain or shine would still be going on 4 years
later and growing every year in size. We had 27 cars caravanning around this
year and some people pulled over thinking we were a funeral procession. I would
like to thank all that came this year and previous years on these Runs. We have
seen some great birds. I would like to say a special thanks to our core group
who has birded from the out set. Mark Greene who gets us to all our spots. Mike
Todd who is always there with help on identifications and helpful insights. To
Ruben Stoll and Chris Agee who usually scout the day before. Thanks to Victor
Stoll also for years past. He is having fun birding in Alaska and missed this
year. Who can blame him. I would like to thank everyone who has made the run
multiple years. Ruth Carr our good luck charm. She always finds a good bird.
Enough of all this sentimental stuff. We all have a great time and that’s what
its all about.
This year we had Black Terns and Least Terns, and more Bald Eagles than I’ve
ever seen at Tiptonville Ferry. Reelfoot lake was covered up in Great egrets.
Did not see Am. White Pelicans there this year, but we picked up a Caspian
Tern. At the entrance to the Island 13 road everyone got great looks at a
Olive-sided Flycatcher. Out at a water area on the way to island thirteen we
had snowy Egrets, Black-necked Stilts, kittling Broad-wing Hawks, Western
Sandpiper, Dowitchers, Yellowlegs, Least Sandpipers, Mississippi Kite, and Am.
White Pelicans. Finally arriving at the Pits in Memphis we thought we were in
Florida we found 127 White Ibis by the end of the day. We also had Baird’s
Sandpiper and the usual list of characters. The pond were rather full with not
much habitat. After most people had left, we had 2 or 2 thousand peeps drop in
at big stinky about and hour before sunset.
Thanks again for another great day of Mississippi flyway birding. Birders
getting together just to bird. What a simple concept. From the comments I heard
there will by a fifth running next year. So mark your calendars for Saturday,
August 31, 2019 and plan on meeting up with us in Tiptonville, TN for the
adventure.
