Victor, Flynn and I decided to spend the day along the Mississippi River
today for Cornell’s Global Big Day. We had great weather and a nice total
of 127 species between dawn and dusk.
Among the highlights were 12 species of waterfowl including Black-bellied
Whistling Duck, Greater White-fronted Goose, Hooded Merganser and Ruddy
Duck, Horned Grebe, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, 3 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS over the pits
at dusk, 13 species of shorebirds including Black-necked Stilts, 10
AMERICAN AVOCETS, 19 Stilt Sandpipers, Pectoral, SEMIPALMATED, WESTERN, and
Solitary Sandpipers and 95 Long-billed Dowitchers, five species of Gulls at
Reelfoot Lake including several Bonaparte’s, 27 FRANKLIN’S and an adult
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, Forster’s Terns, 12 species of raptors, (nothing
unexpected) multiple Blue-headed Vireos, Loggerhead Shrike, five species of
wrens, Wood Thrush, FOS American Pipit, 11 Sparrows including FOS Fox and
White-crowned, Lincoln’s, and LARK SPARROW at Tiptonville Landing, 11 of
the more expected warblers including several Yellow-throated and a HOODED
WARBLER and a DICKCISSEL at Black Bayou.
