Reelfoot Lake area 4/13/03 I spent a leisurely day in the Reelfoot Lake area Sunday with Bud Johnson and Alice Chamberlain, some recent additions to the TN birding community. Nothing great was found, but it was a GREAT day to be out looking anyway! We finished with 91 species for the day, with Alice getting a few lifers along the way. We started at Walnut Log, which definitely was sounding like spring. Parulas were literally everywhere, with Yellow-throated and Prothonotary Warblers being in good numbers as well, and Common Yellowthroats singing from the thickets going into Walnut Log. Warblers were rounded out by the here and there Yellow-rumped, 2 singing Black-throated Green, and one feisty little Nashville Warbler. Also in good numbers were White-eyed Vireo, with singles of Yellow-throated and Red-eyed as well. The only Thrush was Hermit, with several of these being seen. Another treat was an up-close and personal look at a Yellow-crowned Night Heron on the Log. We checked several shorebird spots, with the same mix pretty much everywhere. These were Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpipers, Wilson's Snipe, and of course Killdeer. A couple of Solitary's were seen, but I could not locate Least anywhere, nor Golden-Plovers. A stop or two on the lake didn't produce much except Caspian and Forster's Terns. A couple of Broad-winged Hawks were seen in the hill country east of Reelfoot. Good birding!!!
