Reelfoot Lake Christmas Bird Count
Saturday, December 16, 2006

The 2006 Reelfoot Lake CBC was held on Saturday, December 16. The temperatures
were fairly mild for mid-December but as Jeff Wilson stated in his post we were
in a white-out of fog until almost 10 am! 117 species were tallied which ties
a previous high for the 3rd time. 120 in entirely possible on this count
because like Jeff said we added another 7 species that were seen on either
Friday or Sunday but were missed on count day! This year's count was held in
honor of Don Manning, a former compiler and long-time participant who passed
away earlier this year.

The highlights of the count were:

22 species of waterfowl including 5 species of geese (Ross's & Cackling
included)
2 Red-necked Grebes (the 3rd Reelfoot CBC record)
1 American White Pelican
1 Great Egret (amazingly only the 5th Reelfoot CBC record & the first since
1971!)
2 Sandhill Cranes (the 2nd Reelfoot CBC record - last year was the first)
1 Lesser Black-backed Gull (New species for the count)
1 Forster's Tern (the 2nd count day record)
5 species of owls (including multiple Barn Owls & Short-eared Owls)
2 Fish Crows (the first on count day since 2003)
4 species of wrens (including multiple House & Sedge Wrens)
5 species of warblers! (Orange-crowned, Pine, Palm, & Common Yellowthroat in
addition to Yellow-rumped)

Other notables included: Greater Scaup, Cooper's Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk,
American Woodcock, Eurasian Collared-Dove, good numbers of Loggerhead Shrikes,
Red-breasted Nuthatch, American Pipit, Cedar Waxwing, American Tree Sparrow,
Lapland Longspur, Western Meadowlark, Rusty Blackbird, and Brewer's Blackbird.

Additional count week birds included: Redhead, Common Loon, Golden Eagle,
Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper, and LeConte's Sparrow.

Misses on count day would include many of the count week birds listed above
plus N. Bobwhite & Marsh Wren. I also kind of expected either a Chipping
Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, or a Lincoln's Sparrow to be around as mild as it hs
been, and we also had no Purple Finches or Pine Siskins.

Participants were: Jeff Wilson, Mike Todd, Nancy Moore, Chris Sloan, Melinda
Welton, John Noel, Gail King, Jerry Drewry, Joe Stone, Sabin Thompson, Ken
Leggett, Cecil Brown, Pamela Brown, Charlie Barnett, Elizabeth Barnett, Bob
Foehring, Brainard Palmer-Ball, Donna Ward, Kathie Holder, and Mark Greene.

Thanks to all who participated for another successful and fun count!

Good birding,

Mark Greene
count compiler
Trenton, TN
