I have received an eBird report of a Red-shafted type Northern Flicker from a reliable observer at the Duck River unit of Tennessee NWR (Humphreys County) on Sunday, 3/10/2013. I have not yet gotten any additional info from the observer, so I don't have a precise location. The notes provided mention only the red in the wings, so there was no indication as to whether this might have been a close to 100% "Red-shafted" bird, or an intermediate (generally more numerous east of the Continental Divide). Either way, this would be an exceptional rarity for TN. Anyone in the Duck River area, keep your eyes peeled! And in the case of this or any other oddball Flicker you might encounter, your eyes should go straight to the bird's head if possible to note the color of the nape, crown, face and (if present) mustache and nape crescent. These features all differ between archetypal Red-shafted and Yellow-shafted Flickers, and help indicate how mixed the bird's parentage might be. Flickers will be on the move very soon, so the window for relocating this bird may be short.
