This afternoon at 1:45 I spotted the Red-necked Phalarope, still associating
with still three Wilson’s Phalaropes as others described yesterday, but within
minutes of finding it, as I started to scan the area nearby, something -I
didn’t see what- flushed everything but the stilts. The Phalaropes were all
gone. This was in the second or third pool to the east of Big Stinky, and the
Wilson’s were resting and preening, not feeding; the water there wasn’t deep
enough. The dapper little Red-necked was just sitting still. Noticeably smaller
than the Wilson’s, with overall more contrasting plumage, bright white face
with a black eye patch and thin black crown stripe, sharp thin bill shorter
than Wilson’s.
Relieved beyond belief, as I had read no reports, positive or negative, for
Sunday, I started scanning the edge behind them, when whoosh! everything flew.
So I didn’t see the Red-necked in flight.
We made another pass looking, returning to the same area, without finding any
Phalaropes.
Just wanted to let the group know...It seemed like a fine afternoon for flying,
so, for once I got lucky. I’ve submitted a checklist to eBird.
Thanks to all the Tennessee birders who share their sightings, this was #299,
for the state.
