The Reddish Egret showed up after 5 p.m. at the place where you can drive down to the water before the Rankin Bottoms Coal Tipple. He was first located by David Hunt of Gray. Also present were James Brooks, Carol Gobert of Knoxville and Ginger Goolsby, Morristown. It was still dancing on the far side after 6 p.m. The bill appears more black than the bicolored bill of an adult bird, and it is noticably smaller than the Great Egrets present, but diagnostic is its trick of spreading its wings and dancing in the shallows. For those who haven't been to Rankin Bottoms take exit 8 (Morristown) from U.S. Interstate Highway 81, go south until you cross Douglas Lake, then left onto Rankin Hill Road (watchable wildlife sign). Turn left again at the small store at the bottom of the hill and follow this road which turns to gravel, crosses the tracks and runs beside the tracks before opening into Rankin Bottoms. When you see the old coal tipple ahead of you and water to both left and right, turn right, go down to the water and begin looking. He has been spotted at all hours of the day.
