This morning I had a total of 8 Red-breasted Nuthatches at four different locations along Firetower and Tower Ranch Roads in the Lewis State Forest in Lewis County. This beats my previous daily high total for this county by 7. It seemed there was a nuthatch in every shortleaf pine, as well as in the white pine plantation. None of the birds were in the much more extensive planted loblolly pines. Is this just a local fluke, or has there been a mass movement of the species in to middle Tennessee in recent weeks? I cover these pines every winter around this time of year, and this is the first time they have yielded even one Red-breasted.
