I just returned from 3 weeks in Detroit, Michigan area where Red-breasted Nuthatches have been causing quite a stir for the last couple months due to their early arrival and large numbers. I had them just about everywhere I went on my limited birding trips while there and a few times when I wasn't birding... like one morning in the hotel parking lot. I ran over to Pt Pelee in Ontario and was seemingly never out of earshot of at least one RBNU. Other birding highlights of the trip included 100s of Sharp-shinned Hawks migrating through at Pt Pelee soaring, chasing each other and anything else, and bursting through the trees after the songbirds I was trying to watch. Also an adult and juvenile Red-necked Phalarope at Lake Erie Metropark south of Detroit. On the drive up, Eurasian Collared-Doves were seen frequently at least as far north as Dayton, OH. Dean Edwards finally back in Knoxville, TN... for now On Thu, 20 Sep 2007, Wallace Coffey wrote: > Kevin Breault and TN-Birders, > > Red-breasted Nuthatch: They have been moving south since mid-June > presumably because of the poor cone crop in central Canada.
