Lots of birds at Rankin Bottoms in Cocke County this morning, Sunday
9/3/17.

Highlight was a Red Knot - big chunky gray shorebird. Dwarfed the
Sanderling that were also around.
Two Ruddy Turnstones were up near where the submerged road reappears.
There were hundreds of Killdeer and many Pectoral Sandpipers and Lesser
Yellowlegs.
No godwits, no Baird¹s Sandpiper.

Bald Eagle 1 Adult
Black-bellied Plover 1
American Golden-Plover 3 Continuing. 2 mottled, 1 fully nonbr -
bright gold back and nape.
Ruddy Turnstone 2 Nonbr. Near where road emerges
Red Knot 1 Nonbr, much larger than nearby sanderling, but similarly
light, very gray on back. Big, chunky, and light made it relatively easy
to pick out when scanning. Bird was skittish.
Stilt Sandpiper 30 Quite possible 30 is low count. Most I've seen in
one place.
Sanderling 8 Saw several at various points, never more than two at
once.
Buff-breasted Sandpiper 4 Buffy, active, photos
Pectoral Sandpiper 150 Counted 85 in one scan. They were spread the
length of the mudflats.
Short-billed Dowitcher 3
Wilson's Phalarope 1 Slim, whitish, thin bill. Cont bird
Lesser Yellowlegs 100 Count is an estimate, but there were Lesser
Yellowlegs, Stilts, and Pectorals everywhere. Could easily have been more
than 100 Lessers.
Black Tern 14 Feeding group
Common/Forster's Tern 1 Quick look in flight, orangish bill. Thought
might be Common Tern, but it made only one pass at a distance.
Tree Swallow 500 Could not get accurate count. Many were swirling
around out over the water. Several hundred were landed on the higher,
drier part of the mudflats.
Bank Swallow 1 Buzzed the kayak multiple times at <10' distance.
Obvious band on upper breast.

Should still be good for KTOS field trip Monday afternoon.
