June 28, 2008 While birding and butterflying Greene Mountain Road (in southern Greene County) in the early afternoon today, I heard a Red Crossbill. The bird called loudly a few times as it flew over the woods a short distance away from me and appeared to be headed west. This occurred on the back (i.e., south) side of the gorge, about a mile from Viking Mountain Road. The northern and western edges of the gorge are heavily covered in pines, perhaps helping to explain the presence of the crossbill. I also found at least a half dozen male Diana Fritillaries along Greene Mountain Road and nearby areas. One perched on the driver's seat of my car and offered the look of a lifetime.
