I spotted a Merlin flying fast and erratically this evening about 6:30, as I
was driving. Trying not to wreck the car, I watched as it landed in a tree near
the main entrance of the Shelby Farms dog park. It had prey in its talons
(appeared to be a mockingbird), which explains the erratic flight, since the
prey was nearly as large as the it was. It remained perched a couple of minutes
and was being harassed by a swallow. It flew off to the East over the trees. I
posted it in EBird with photos. Very lucky timing and was fortunate I had my
camera in tow (and didn’t wreck the car...)
