Rankin area, Cocke county, 5/25/07, 5:00-7:00 PM Douglas Lake elevation: 981.8' The lake continues to creep up into Rankin Bottoms, though it's 12' lower than the same time last year. Shorebird stopovers are dwindling, and wading bird numbers are increasing. The waterfowl population is growing as broods hatch out. Duay O'Neil and I scanned the river from the Rankin Bridge, then canoed from Leadvale up into Rankin Bottoms. Partial list: Canada goose (200+, many broods) Wood duck (60, + 2 broods) Mallard (55) Double-cr. cormorant (15) Great blue heron (22) Great egret (23) Little blue heron, adult Cattle egret Green heron (6) Black vulture (45 - seems to be a resident flock) Osprey (7) ** Semipalmated plover Killdeer (14) Greater yellowlegs Spotted sandpiper (3) Belted kingfisher **I found another active osprey nest earlier in the week, on a railroad communication tower next to Industrial Rd. That makes at least 8 in the general area.
