On Saturday, 5/6/06, we canoed around to several spots in the Rankin region of Douglas Lake looking for shorebird activity in particular (by "Rankin region", I'm referring to all of the lake impoundment from the Leadvale boat ramp southward to the mouth of the Pigeon River). Lake level was at 990.6 and rising, partly cloudy skies, & lots of fishing activity, which tends to drive birds away from the more popular areas, such as Rankin Bottoms (RB). There were relatively few waders or ducks to be seen; no eagles, either. We spotted yellow-throated vireo and yellow-billed cuckoo for the first time this season. Shorebirds were foraging in the shallows between the French Broad channel and Holttown Rd., and those between the Nolichucky and Leepers Ferry Rd (LFR). Greater yellowlegs (7) 2-HTR, 5-LFR Lesser yellowlegs (46) 6-HTR, 40-LFR Solitary sandpiper (19) 7-HTR, 12-LFR Spotted sandpiper(2) RB, HTR Least sandpiper (5-LFR) Killdeer (5) 2-HTR, 3-LFR Michael Sledjeski & Leslie Gibbens Cocke county TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
