I led a Sierra Club canoe outing at Rankin Bottoms in Cocke county yesterday
morning, from Rankin Bridge along the west riverbank to the the coal tipple,
then back along the old RR bed trail. The lake is higher (994'+) than
normal summer level; the area is almost entirely underwater. No shorebirds
were seen.

Some observations along the way:

Wood duck (14 adults, and 3 duckling clutches
Double-crested cormorant (55, 4 nests)
Great blue heron (17, 3 nests)
Great egret
Green heron (9, 3 nests)
Osprey (8, 3 nests, plus a male starting a fourth))
Red-shouldered hawk (1 adult, 2 nestlings)
Red-tailed hawk
Bald eagle (1 immature)
American coot (5, possible nesting pair?)
Red-headed woodpecker (new nest location - last year's occupied by
starlings)
Eastern kingbird (3 nests)
Cliff swallow (400+; seems like fewer nests than last year [700+] -I didn't
stop to count them)
Cedar waxwing (also present 2 weeks ago, but not mentioned in Don Miller's
report)
Prothonotary warbler (37)

I also caught a split-second glimpse of a large white-bellied bird with
black wingtips gliding past a treeline - American white pelican?
