Cocke county TN; 5/15/07, 1:00 -4:00 PM.
Douglas Lake elevation: 980.6'

Douglas Lake is rising across Rankin Bottoms, flooding the grassy meadow and
just starting to cover the road across the bottoms. Foraging area for birds
has increased substantially, and the inundated road will minimize human
disturbance.
After walking out to the riverbank below the old Rankin Bridge, we canoed
around the Leadvale area, then up into Rankin Bottoms. Many Canada Geese &
goslings, mallards, cliff swallows, redwings, & grackles. Also:

Wood duck (48 + 6 ducklings)
Great blue heron (19, 1 definitely smaller - a fledgling? heron nests of
'06 unused this year)
Great egret (14)
Green heron (2)
Osprey (7)
Broad-winged hawk
Am. coot
Killdeer (3)
Greater yellowlegs
Lesser yellowlegs (24)
Solitary sandpiper
Spotted sandpiper (7)
Semipalmated sandpiper (11)
Least sandpiper (21)
Pectoral sandpiper (2)
Forster's tern
Warbling vireo
