Rankin Bottoms, Cocke County, 918/1, 4-7 PM, by canoe Douglas Lake elevation: 978.1 ft. From the car, we could see a few shorebirds along the mudbar east of the tipple road ; we launched the canoe and went west under the trestle, where we found a lot more. At about 6 PM, all of those flew back across to Rankin Bottoms, joined the others, and spread out along the mudbar. Great egrets were flying to roost west of the trestle as the sun went down.
