Rankin Bottoms WMA
Cocke County
5:45 pm to 7:30 pm
Lake level: 984.25’

Spent the late afternoon birding by kayak. Almost all the non-Killdeer
shorebirds were on the very north (left as you face the cove) end of the
mudflats on the east side of the cove almost to the Nolichucky channel. The
Buff-breasted Sandpipers were almost glowing in the late afternoon sun. The
Black-bellied Plover has most of its summer plumage and should be seen easily
from shore with a scope. The American Golden-Plover has hanging with a small
group of Killdeers on a point of mudflat almost directly across from the
tipple. It showed a strong white supercilium and dark cap and it flew once
showing a total gray underwing. Must have a scope and it will still be a
challenge from the shore. The lake level and rate of drop is mirroring last
year. So if the birds hang around, the viewing from shore should get much
better over the next week or two.

Also, I had the time to take a weed eater to the poison ivy trail leading from
the small parking area about 1/4 mile from the entrance to the WMA.
