On August 23, 2005, Michael Sledjeski, Leslie Gibbons, Jane Awl (TVA
Wetlands Biologist), Brandon Chance (TVA Aquatic Biologist), and I used a
motorized boat to survey Rankin Bottoms, Cocke and Hamblen Counties, TN. We
birded from 1:35 pm to approximately 5 pm. We launched the boat from the
TWRA boat ramp near Rankin Bridge and went downstream into the mudflat
between Holt Town Road and the riverbank. We birded the area from 2:00 pm
to 3:00. At this time the water elevation was 989.46. Here we saw:
Killdeer- 12 Dunlin- 1 Pectoral Sandpiper- 30 (all in one flock) Spotted Sandpiper- 3 Solitary Sandpiper- 1 Least Sandpiper- 3 Semipalmated Plover- 1 Great Egrets- 13 Great Blue Heron- 1 Green Heron- 1 Black-crowned Night-Heron- 1 Little Blue Heron- 1 Canada Geese- 15 Wood Duck- 4 Belted Kingfishers and others
Killdeer- 30 Semipalmated Plover- 1 Sanderling- 1 Common Snipe- 1 Pectoral Sandpiper- 9 Spotted Sandpiper- 1 Western Sandpiper- 1 Least Sandpiper- 1 Solitary Sandpiper- 1 White Ibis- 3 (all immature) Great Blue Heron- 2 Blue-winged Teal- 10 Little Blue Heron- 2 Great Egret- 22 and others
