I spent this evening Oct 11 birding at Rankin Bottoms
Avocet 1
White Pelican 6
Lesser Yellowlegs 3
Great Egret 93
Great Blue Heron 33
Double Crested Cormorant 100
Mallard 6
Mixed flock of blue and green winged teal. 40
Coot 3
Crow 8
Belted Kingfisher 1
Canada Goose. 20. There was a strangely colored goose in this group with a
light head and broad white patches on the wings. The birds were distant and as
I was watching 3 low flying paragliders put all of the birds in the area into
the air. These motorized parachutes flew over the mudflats at about twice the
height of the trees above high water. Most birds quickly returned when the
aircraft left but I did not see the goose again. Is this sort of disturbance
common at Rankin
