Radnor Lake State Natural Area
Davidson Co., TN
2018 Dec. 7

Went to Radnor Lake this Friday morning and walked counter clockwise
around the lake, taking the road first, which is the opposite of my
usual walk from the west parking lot. I spotted a group of 10 RED-
BREASTED MERGANSERs in the middle of the lake. Land birds were not
too abundant, but I did enjoy a group of 3 tom turkeys strutting
their stuff right next to the Lake Trail. None of the invading
winter finches were seen today, but I did get my first sighting
this year at Radnor Lake of a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, an adult. This
species is relatively rare in Davidson County, although for the
past several years there have been 1-2 birds sporadically found
at Radnor Lake, usually seen from Otter Creek Road. I first heard
the bird calling about 200 yards past bench 23 (going clockwise)
on the Lake Trail and had to retrace my steps before I got several
nice looks at the bird. It appeared to be working some sapsucker
holes in a tree not too far from the trail. This is the general
trail area where I've found one a time or two in past years.
