Radnor Lake State Natural Area
Davidson Co.
2011 Mar. 26
7:20-9:20am
cloudy and cool

Saturday morning my wife Bonnie and I decided to walk around Radnor
Lake before the rain arrived. It was an enjoyable morning with
lots of wildflowers beginning to bloom. We saw or heard 40 species
including several first of the year birds. The list is below.

Many wintering species are on the move. Plenty of duck species are
still around to remind us of winter. We saw several groups of
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERs, a number of GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETs and BROWN
CREEPERs plus several RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETs. However it was the
migrating spring birds that were the treats. We had a nice group
of BARN, TREE, and N. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWs coursing over the lake.
A ranger pointed out an OSPREY perched in a tree in the north cove area.
Also first of the year birds were two singing LOUISIANA WARBLERs and
a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER around the dam. Another first was a BLUE-HEADED
VIREO that was singing and seen just before Long Bridge. Walkers
mentioned BARRED OWLs in a couple locations and we found one of them.
