We went for a morning walk at Radnor Lake this morning and ran
into Kevin Bowden, Danny Shelton, Jan Shaw, and Mary Zimmerman.
Once again most of the action was around the dam, so my wife
and I stayed there for over 1 hour. Walking down to the deck
overlooking the lake on the Lake Trail, Bonnie and I turned
back toward the dam, and a photographer caught up to us, who
said that there was a Peregrine Falcon perched on a snag
that could be seen from the road.
Arriving at the dam area, Jan Shaw was sitting in a rocking
chair on the porch of the old Visitor's Center/Ranger's House,
and asked if I could ID the raptor that was perched on the
large bare snag at Grassy Point. We quickly saw it's helmeted
head and IDed it as the Peregrine. After watching it for
several minutes, a Belted Kingfisher came out into the lake
from the cove in front of us and flew very low to the water.
The Peregrine sprang into action,dropping from its perch and
flew after it. The kingfisher zigged and zagged very low to
the water for perhaps 15-20 seconds before the Peregrine,
flying slightly above but a bit behind, finally caught up
to it. At that point the kingfisher dove into the water
and the Peregrine, still just a few feet above the water,
flew into the cove without its breakfast!
After perhaps 5-7 minutes, the Peregrine flew out of the
cover, very low to the water and went around the point
to the deck area along the Lake Trail and was lost from
view. So Jan's "arm chair" Peregrine put on a very exciting
show for all who saw the predator/prey action.
