I think a partial explanation is the fact that a vulture roost appears to be developing on the high tension power line support towers along I-65 just a couple of miles east of the lake (about a mile north of the Old Hickory Blvd exit. I just noticed it for the first time a few days ago late in the day when I saw 20+ or so vultures scattered across 2 or 3 of the towers. I cannot recall ever having seen vultures roost there before, although it doesn't surprise me since they tend to move the roosts around every few years and it is a logical place for them.
