cool and refreshing

With the cold front moving through yesterday I headed for Radnor Lake
on Tuesday morning to see if I could locate a MOURNING WARBLER, a bird
that with all my recent traveling, I still needed to locate for 2012.
The morning was wonderfully cool compared to the past couple days.
I initially walked 100 yards up the spillway trail from the west
parking lot and almost immediately heard a MOURNING WARBLER singing,
where a large dead tree trunk makes a bridge across the creekbed.
Although on the far side of the creek, the bird was close to the
wooded edge. It sang repeatedly, and so I waited for perhaps a
dozen minutes before I got a splendid sighting of the male MOURNING.

Continuing my walk to Long Bridge, I watched a CAROLINA WREN feed a
begging young BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD. At Long Bridge I was joined by
Jan Shaw, and we eventually spotted a singing CANADA WARBLER, while
hearing a singing WOOD THRUSH in the background. Walking back
to the parking lot we had nice views of a singing YELLOW-THROATED
VIREO.

At the end of our walk we stopped again to look for the MOURNING
WARBLER. Although quieter this time, it sang briefly, and we soon
saw it in nearly the identical spot that I had spotted it earlier.
Although the migrants were few, it was a wonderful morning of birding.
